2016 Winners Announced

Piano Competition
The 12th annual West Coast Ragtime Society Youth Ragtime Piano Competition on November 5th, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Woodland. With over 50 kids participating, the sound of music — Ragtime, that is — filled an entire day. How gratifying it was to hear such wonderful music in the hands of very talented kids. Judging the competition were Adam Swanson, Petra Sullivan and Jack Bradshaw.

One teacher who entered 10 of his students this year said that he gives them rags that are above their classical playing level. He said that they love the competition and work harder on their rags than they do on their other music. After learning their competition pieces, they use their newly acquired skills to do better on their classical repertoire. Also, the parents are happy that their kids are getting a valuable opportunity to perform. Many thanks to our teachers and parents for sending us such wonderful players and special thanks to our wonderful volunteers who make this all happen.

Giving kids additional opportunities to perform ragtime gives them more experience with the genre. In April of 2016, Dara Phung and Sophie Liu from last year's competition performed at the Santa Clara Library on a program with the Bradshaws. In August, eight competition participants performed on the Fourth Annual Diego & Friends concert at the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival. If you have a venue, we have the kids! Seventeen-year-old Allie Sung-Miller's online youth ragtime group, The Sacramento Syncopators, is now presenting successful concerts for nursing homes and civic events in the Sacramento area.

The West Coast Ragtime Society Youth Ragtime Piano competition for 2017 will be held on November 4th, again at the United Methodist Church in Woodland, and all children ages 8-18 are invited to participate. A flyer will be posted sometime in April.
