Edward A. Berlin's books and articles have changed our understanding of ragtime history and have brought a new standard of critical thinking to commentary on vernacular, American music.  King of Ragtime (1994), his biography of Scott Joplin, illustrates this exacting approach as it uncovers a startling amount of new and unsuspected material on ragtime's greatest composer. His Reflections and Research on Ragtime (1987), which discusses promising ragtime topics still open to new research and presents a history of ragtime in New York City, won an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence in writing about music. His Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History (1980), analyzes ragtime’s evolution and illustrates how the American public responded to this innovative music.  Ed has also written more than a hundred articles and has lectured widely at events in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.  More information is available on his website, www.edwardaberlin.com
